An Intranet-Assisted Approach to Curriculum Design for CIS Classes

The traditional approach to computer information systems (CIS) curriculum design does not adequately prepare students forthemodembusiness environment they willface upon graduation. Modembusiness makes extensiveuseof electronic communication tools to enhance productivity. This paper describes a project that systematically incorporates electronic tools into traditional CIS curriculum design with the intent of finding an appropriate balance between the old and the new. The results of applying the approach to a classroom environment are described and the advantages and disadvantages ofthe technique are discussed. Plans for future research are outlined.
Jay M. Lightfoot is a professor of information systems in the Monfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado. He graduated with a Ph.D. in management science/information systems form the University of Colorado. His research interests include web-based education systems, database systems for business applications, and artificial intelligence knowledge acquisition. He has been published in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Expert Systems, Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, and Journal of Educational Technology Systems.
