Designing and Teaching an E-Commerce Course: Two Principles and a Case Study

ABSTRACT

Thispaper suggests a course outline, intheform of a setof relevant topics, forteaching ane-commerce course. Thecourse outline is built on (a) two principles considered important for teaching an e-commerce course and (b) the understanding developed from a case study of an e-commerce course taught using those two principles. The first principle is balancing teaching e-commerce business knowledge with teaching e-commerce technical knowledge. The second principle is balancing teaching e-commerce concepts with teaching specific software tools to develop an e-commerce application. The analysis and discussion of these two principles and the case study lead to a suggested set of e-commerce business and technical topics relevant forteaching ane-commerce course.

Nanda C. Surendra is an assistant professor in the School of CSIS at Pace University. She earned her MBA at Madras University, India and her PhD in information systems at the Universityof Cincinnati. Hercurrent research interests arein designing and developing web applications, data modeling, and component based software development.
