Integrating Technology with Time-honored Principles

ABSTRACT

This paper provides principles for using and evaluating technology in enhancing learning and teaching. Using technology in ways that increase student-faculty interaction, encourage cooperative student endeavors, actively involve the student in learning, give prompt feedback, provide time on task, present challenging expectations, and respects diverse talents and ways oflearning are shown to enhance learning. The author concludes that the most effective business schools are those that are continually reassessing, reevaluating, and improving their institutions and the quality of the learning experiencein a manner thatreinforces these principles.


ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nancy Sutton Bell is dean ofthe Michael E. Stephens College of Business at the University of Montevallo. Dr. Bell earned her PhD in business administration at The University of Georgia. From 1983-1993, she taught in the Department of Risk Management and Insurance as Florida State University. Between 1993 and 1999, Dr. Bell held the positions of SAFECO Distinguished professor of risk management and insurance and chair of the Department of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate in the College of Business at Washington State University. Dr. Bell has published over 50 articles in the areas of business management, business education, technology, and risk management and insurance. Herhonors include awards for outstanding advising (twice) at Washington State University and (twice) Florida State University; outstanding teaching (twice) at Florida State University. Dr. Bell is listed in Who's Who in Finance, the Lexington Who's Who Registry, and Outstanding Women of the 2(Jh Century.
