A Team Project Approach to Teaching E-Commerce Development

ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the design, management, and assessment ofteamprojects in e-commerce development courses. The design ofsuch courses involves the identification of topics essential to e-commerce and user-centered Web engineering. Usinga case study, thispaper examineshow teamprojects can be designed, managed, and evaluated in the context ofa graduate level e-commerce course. An in-depth analysis presents the intent, deliverables, and process for each phase ofthe team project. Various tactics are offered to effectively manage and appraise student teamwork. Drawingfrom the case study, the author recommends practical strategies for working with real clients for student projects, creating a gallery of student work, and using assessment tools to manage team progress. A 65-item comprehensivechecklistfor team projects and a peer evaluation form for student teams are provided in the appendix section.


ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Susy S. Chan is an associate professor and directs the Center for E-Connnerce Research in the School of Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Information Systems at DePaul University. She is the founding director of DePaul University's pioneering master's andbaccalaureate programs in e-commerce technology. As a former CIa at DePaul, Dr. Chan developed its six-campus IT infrastructure. Her research focuses on e-business strategies, enterprise applications and trausformation, e-commerce curriculum, and mobile commerce. The Mobile Connnerce Research Lab that Dr. Chan co-leads studies usability and development issues concerning wireless applications. She received a PhD in Instructional Technology from Syracuse University.
