Assessing Strategic Alignment in Real-Time

ABSTRACT

Strategic alignment, the degree to which organizational and technology strategies and infrastructure are linked, is a key area offocus for executives. However, before executives can attempt to assess their firm's level of strategic alignment, they must befamiliar with the theoretical underpinnings 0/strategic alignment as well as understand what the model's resulting analysis will offer them. Thispaper will present an overview ofstrategic alignment andshowcase a web-enabled version 0/the model developed to offer executives a tool to analyze their firm's alignment.


ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Raymond Papp is an associate professor in the Information Technology Management Department in the Sykes College of Business at the University ofTampa. Dr. Papp completed his doctorate in information management at Stevens Institute of Technology. His dissertation, "Determinants ofStrategically Aligned Organizations: A Multi-industry, Multi-Perspective Analysis," is anempirical investigation intothe determinants of strategic alignment, specifically addressing the impact of title/function, industry, and firm performance.

His research interests include strategic alignment, IT for Competitive advantage, distance learning, and pedagogical issues in IT. Dr. Papp's recent book, Strategic Information Technology: Opportunities for Competitive Advantage, highlights the use of information systems to achieve competitive advantage and contains numerous cases and research on strategic information systems. He has recently published in Annals of Cases on Information Technology, Communications ofthe AIS, and Industrial Management and Data Systems as well as presented at numerous national and international conferences.

Dr. Papp has worked as a computer programmer, senior analyst, and management consultant and continues to maintain a consulting practice where he specializes in management consulting, strategic use ofIS, and personalized training.
