Teaching with Online Case Studies: Implementation and Evaluation Issues

The case study is one of the most widely used tools in many disciplines including Information Systems Management. Many online courses are incorporating the benefits of case studies. Case studies are now available online and case discussions can be conducted using online discussion tools. The online case study is an innovative pedagogical tool, however, more research is needed in regards its implementation issues. A major objective of this paper is to analyze the use of online discussion methods for case study discussion. It discusses background issues regarding online cases, and the method for conducting an online case discussion. Some important questions explored are: What is the level of discussion participation in an online case analysis? Is the quality of the discussions in online case comparable to traditional discussions? What are the major similarities and differences in interaction and learning between online case study discussion and traditional case discussion?

Mahesh Raisinghani is an associate professor at TWU's School of Management. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is the editor of three books: "Business Intelligence in the Digital Economy"; "ECommerce: Opportunities and Challenges"; and Cases on Worldwide ECommerce. He has published in Information and Management, IEEETransactions of Engineering Management, Journal of Global IT Management, Journal of E-Commerce Research, Information Strategy, Journal of IT Theory and Applications, Journal of Digital Information, Journal of IT Cases and Applications Research, Enterprise Systems Journal, Journal of Computer Information Systems, and Information Systems Management among others. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Global IT Management, Information Resources Management Journal, Journal of E-Commerce in Organizations, and the Journal of E-Commerce Research. He is included in the millennium edition of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who Among America's Teachers and Who's Who in Information Technology.
Roberto Vinaja is an Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems in the Department of Business Administration and MIS, College of Business and Technology, Texas A&M University-Commerce. His research interests include Database Management, and Decision Support Systems. He serves as book reviewer for the Journal of Global Information Technology Management. His research has been published in the following journals: International Journal of Management, United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) Journal, and Midwestern Business and Economic Review.
